An Analysis of the Relationship Between the Social Support and the Health State of the Old


Abstract
This study was done for the purpose of analyzing the relationship between the social support and the health state of the old.
The hypothesis tested was that the old peoples¢¥ social support scores are negatively related to their thealth problem scores.
The study employed a cross-sectional survey design. Data were gathered by structured interview method in August, 1984.
The 125 persons of the old who -has lived now in Seoul were selected conveniently.
The instruments used for this study were the social support scale and Health Problem Scale for the old developed by the researcher.
Analysis of data was done by Product Moment Correlation, Analysis of Variance, and t-Test. The results of this study were as follows;
1) Regarding the hypothesis, the relationship between social support score and health problem score was statistically significant. (r= 3593, P< . 001)
Regarding to retest the hypothesis, the relationships between the each score of 12 item of social support scale and health problem score were statistically significant, the relationship between the social support score and the physical health problem score was statistically significant, and the. relationship between the social support score and mental health problem score was statistically-significant.
2) When the relationships between the demographic characteristics of the respondents and the level of the social support score of the old explored, age(r= .494, p<.00l), religion(F=14.991, p<. 001), education level(F=5.560, p<.001), occupation(t=4.55, P<.001), income(r= .595, P<.001), the state of being together(F=53.273, p<.001) were significantly related to social support score.
3) When the relationships between the demographic characteristics of the respondents and the health problem score of the old explored, sex (t = 2. 05, p < . 05), age (r = . 187, p < . 05), religion (F = 3 130, P<.05), education level(F=2.818, p<,05), occupation(t=4.54, p<¢¥.001)¢¥, income(r= . 260, p< 005), the stat of being; together(F=53.273, p<.001) were significantly related to health problem score.
